Gold: vermeil, plated and solid

Gold Vermeil vs. Gold Plated: Understanding the Difference

When it comes to gold jewellery, the base metal beneath the gold is everything.

All my gold vermeil pieces begin with a foundation of recycled sterling silver, then dipped in a layer of gold. This is the essence of gold vermeil — a high-quality metal base that ensures durability, longevity, and beauty.

On the other hand, when you see ‘gold plated,’ the base is often made from non-fine metals like brass, copper, or steel—materials that are more fleeting in nature and not built to last. This is the metal behind most of what we call fast jewellery.

I have a special place in my heart for silver—noble, enduring, and timeless. Jewellery made from brass, copper, or steel may have its moments, but it simply can’t stand the test of time in the same way.

Vermeil offers a higher quality than plated jewellery, mainly because of its sterling silver base. Even if the gold layer begins to fade over time, you’re left with a beautiful sterling silver piece beneath.

However, remember, it’s still a layer of gold. Not solid gold. And because of this, both vermeil and plated jewellery require care. They are sensitive to water, humidity, and skincare products—avoid wearing them while showering, swimming, or using lotions. Exposure to water, soap, or harsh chemicals will gradually diminish the gold layer, and in some cases, can damage it immediately. Please, don’t use any polishing cloths or liquids that might wear down the plating.

If you seek jewellery that can withstand the daily ebb and flow of life, solid gold is the answer. It is the metal chosen for heirlooms—pieces that stay with you through the years. It’s lasting, enduring, and the ideal choice for wedding bands, engagement rings, and pieces meant to be cherished forever.

I hope this helps you understand the difference and how to care for your pieces. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out via email—I’m always here to help.
